It registers almost 2,000 rail operations per year for the transport of containers, liquid and solid bulk goods

The Port of Huelva participates in the European project called I RAIL (Interoperability of the rail systems with TAF TSI in TEN-T Corridors), framed in the European strategy for the digitalisation and homogenisation of rail transport, whose objective is focused on boosting the competitive position of the rail sector by improving the level of interoperability of the rail systems, the development of a common approach oriented towards safety in the European rail system and the creation of a single rail space without borders that guarantees a high level of safety.

In this way, by being part of the I Rail project, the Port of Huelva will be able to increase the competitiveness of rail transport by reducing operating costs, guaranteeing the safety of rail operations and improving the planning of intermodal operations.

The results of the Huelva port’s traffic diversification strategy are also reflected in the rail mode. Thus, in the year 2022, almost 2,000 rail operations have been registered, of which more than 400 correspond to container train traffic and the rest is distributed between liquid and solid bulk. Forecasts for this year point to traffic values higher than those prior to the pandemic caused by COVID-19. In this context, it should be noted that almost 30% of the container traffic of the Port of Huelva uses the rail mode on the land side.
